Most Central Banks Will Not Be Launching Digital Money in Foreseeable Future, BIS Survey Finds

Central banks across the world are continuing to explore offering their own official digital money, but widespread adoption of this new form of money lies well off, a report from the Bank for International Settlements released on Wednesday said.

“Central banks collectively representing a fifth of the world’s population are likely to issue a general purpose CBDC [central bank digital currency] in the next three years,” said the report, which surveyed central banks on their plans for official digital money.
