Remote working during the COVID-19 pandemic means we’re all taking more virtual meetings. Like Zoom, Google Meet is a popular platform for virtual huddles.

Chromebooks are a popular way to tap into Google’s chat service, but it isn’t uncommon to see performance suffer when using Google Meet with several tabs open. So the latest Chrome OS update changes how Meet streams video to improve performance, TechRadar reports.

Chrome OS will now automatically adjust Meet’s resolution or frame rate while users swap between apps to keep video as crisp as possible. It will also intelligently adapt to lower network speeds by deactivating some video when it detects interruptions.

Google also introduced certain performance changes to keep Chromebooks running smoothly. It’s done away with unnecessary processing to keep productivity up. With users often multitasking during meetings, this should keep everyone on task, even during virtual happy hours.

When it comes to video conferencing apps, we put Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams through their paces. In the end, thanks to its security, compliance certifications, and ease of use, Google Meet came out on top.
