Expedite AIIMS project, Stalin tells PM Modi | Chennai News

MADURAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite the AIIMS project at Thoppur in Madurai which has seen no progress since the foundation stone was laid by him more than two years ago. In a letter to the PM, he said there are now reports of the project being started temporarily in another location.
Stalin said that after the PM laid the foundation stone on January 27, 2019, the Tamil Nadu government had transferred the land for the prestigious institution to the Government of India. However, there has been no physical progress after that.
Fast-tracking work on the institution is necessary for providing quality tertiary care to people belonging to the southern districts as well as the neighbouring states. He said it is learnt that the Union government has appointed a president, executive director and some committees for the institute. But, it also happens that these committees do not have any clear authority to execute a project of this magnitude.
Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that the option of starting the institution temporarily at some other location is being considered. This would further delay the project. Hence, he requested Modi to appoint a dedicated team of officers with adequate financial and administrative powers immediately for expediting the project. The ministry of health and family welfare should finalise the commencement of construction works immediately, he said. The state government will extend all cooperation needed for the immediate commencement and completion of the project, he said.
